South Beach Yacht Club (SBYC), a volunteer club in San Francisco’s South Beach neighborhood, serves nearly 500 members. SBYC offers various programs, including an 8-week summer youth sailing program.

Weekly summer camps cater to basic/intermediate and advanced sailing participants. The weekly summer camp programs SBYC membership to participate.

The Basic/Intermediate Sailing teaches youths aged 8-17 years the basics of sailing. It consists of land and water sessions and includes learning key sailing skills such as boat handling, boat nomenclature, knot tying, sailing terminologies, and wind principles. Participants do not require previous experience but will venture into water while wearing a life jacket.

Later in the week, the focus shifts to adventure sailing and campers helming their boats in turns. If there’s sufficient time and willingness to learn more, instructors teach their students the basics of racing and short races.

Next, the Advanced/Lasers & Double-handed sailing targets youths aged between 10-17 years who’ve attended a previous SBYC summer camp, sailed in a weekend program, or have attended other sailing camps/have hands-on sailing experience. The class targets sailors who already understand the fundamentals of sailing and seek to improve their skills.

First, sailors familiarize themselves with equipment and embark on sailing adventures. Later, participants learn laser and double-handed sailing. Depending on the interest and level of enrollment, sailors may learn the basics of racing and racing strategies. All SBYC youth sailing program costs range from $300 - $ 580.
